Ranitomeya imitator “Varadero”

Often simply shorthanded as “Varaderos”, Ranitomeya imitator “Varadero” has a lot going for it as a pet poison dart frog. They’re bold and colorful. They’re very modestly sized for a thumbnail (our breeding trio happily resides in a vertical 10-gallon conversion, although they were more productive breeders when they first started breeding in a 6-quart Sterilite clamp box!). They have an audible call that’s not terribly annoying; mine mainly call when the lights come on, and again when they go out. Melanogaster fruit flies are the staple offering for these frogs, and they have a peculiar habitat of parent-raising their tadpoles in the vivarium, producing feeder eggs much like the more challenging Oophaga-type dart frogs. And to think, I bought this trio of frogs pretty much on a whim…and they’ve grown to be one of my favorites!
