Begonia breviromosa var. exotica

This plant was received simply at Begonia brevirimosa, but it is likely the cultivar or subspecies known as Begonia brevirimosa var. exotica. It is a shrub-type Begonia species from New Guinea. Always in demand, but a challenging species to grow and a temperamental shipper (dropping some or all leaves during shipment is normal…try to root them, and also take care of the main cane and it will bounce back). Sold rooted in a 2″ cup; minimum size will be 2 leaves, but may be larger.

General Care Information

A shrub-type Begonia that happens to do well in vivarium conditions. Leaf color and quantity will vary from individual to individual based on age and culture conditions here; do not expect your plants to look identical to either of the ones shown here! Young leaves start out green and don’t reveal their full potential until much larger sizes (leaves can easily be 5-6″ in length or longer). This plant can reach a height of 2-3 feet, so definitely only as a showpiece in larger vivariums.

While requiring high humidity, it does not like wet leaves, they will quickly rot and fall off. In fact, this is (in my opinion) a somewhat challenging species…I can grow it well, but keeping all the leaves on the plants is tough! Good air circulation will likely improve your growth results.
