Checkboard Barbs, Oliotius oligolepis (formerly Puntius oligolepis) were one of the first small schooling type fishes I kept in what we’d call a “nano” aquarium these days…back then it was just a called a 2.5 gallon tank. For some reason, this small and attractive Barb simply hasn’t been quite as available as I would have presumed, so when they showed up, I just had to have some around again. It’s time to rediscover this overlooked classic species. They max out at only 1.5″; the ones I offer are going to be closer to 0.75 to 1″.
