Koumansetta rainfordi “Court Jester Goby”, Captive Bred

This is an amazing offering; captive-bred Rainford’s Gobies, also known as the Court Jester Goby (and even the really odd common name, “Old Glory”), Koumansetta rainfordi, produced by Biota Palau. Simply put, these fish are worlds apart from their wild caught counterparts. Yes, they’re more expensive, but they’re also in great condition, eat prepared foods readily, and do all the things that you’d want from a captive-bred fish. This is something worth supporting!

Rainford’s Gobies are renowned for their ability and predilection to eat hair algae…you read that right! No, they won’t denude an overgrown tank the way a tang would, but they have this great added bonus of consuming a known problem! They also eat small planktonic type foods, and in the aquarium, small pellet foods make an easy staple for the captive-bred version of this species.

In holding here, they’re sociable and easy going, spending much of their time hovering in the water column. I’ve not noticed any intraspecific aggression, but pairing could present challenges (it’s simply hard to say at the moment). The size shipped by Biota tends to be a medium sized fish around 1.5″ in length; the species ultimately can grow to be about 3″.
